Writing for smart leaders

by Ron on October 25, 2012

Earlier this year I traveled to China’s interior province of Anhui and during that trip I got to see several examples of smart leadership in action.  I saw people younger than me being energetic and full of life and willingly stepping in to serve.  Too many leaders seem to hunger for celebrity and too few embrace the job that needs to be done and then do it in hiddenness and without recognition.

It has started to dawn on me that I should put more energy into writing for this cohort of up-and-coming smart leaders.

Writing is a way to be generous and share lessons learned.  It also allows me to broaden my impact by reaching a larger audience of people.  It is also something I believe I have some talent and passion for.

Stay tuned here to see and sample more of the leadership lessons I’ve learned.  Give me your comments and feedback too; I welcome it.

What is smart leadership?

by Ron on June 6, 2012

Smart Leadership is not in our heads!

Most people think that smart leaders are the answer people.  They have the answers, the knowledge about the important things.  Leadership is equated with IQ (intelligence quotient).  Big problem:  I’ve know a good number of smart people who were not leaders.  I’ve also know some good leaders who were not the brightest or most endowed with intellectual gifts.

Intelligence is just one aspect of smart leadership, and not the major one at that. [click to continue…]

Self Doubt and Mission

February 7, 2012

Right now is a tough time.  I don’t know if it’s the cold and dark weather of winter in a strange country, but maybe that has something to do with it.  I know there’s more though.  There’s a shadow peering over my shoulder, and it’s the shadow of doubt.  Self doubt. Why am I here? […]

About Vision

February 1, 2012

There is so much in the field of leadership about having a vision, getting clear on your vision, communicating your vision to your followers.  I have had leaders confide in me that they don’t get it.  How are they supposed to get a vision?  Where does it come from?  “I have a goal.  We have […]

Leadership can be learned…

December 10, 2011

Leadership can be learned…but not in the formal way. Smart leaders are not just “book smart”, and some great leaders lack much formal education.  That’s not how you learn leadership. “Leadership, like swimming, cannot be learned by reading about it.”  Henry Mintzberg Of course leadership can be studied as a subject.  James MacGregor Burns was […]

Big changes

November 17, 2011

It’s been three months and it feels like two years since we moved across the ocean from Denton, Texas to Shanghai, China. Work started up right away, we stayed in a hotel for about two weeks and had to find an apartment and get the boys into school.  What a whirlwind!

Making a move

August 10, 2011

We are relocating our base from Texas to Shanghai, China.  It’s exciting and sure to be an adventure. Is this a smart move?  Time will tell, but my family and I have taken on this challenge. Next stop, Shanghai.

Road Warrior

February 25, 2011

I’ve just returned from two weeks away from home.  I was on the road (and in the air), from DFW to Shanghai, to Beijing (Happy Chinese New Year!), Guilin and back to Shanghai delivering two days of sales training to an industrial client in three different cities.  Back in Shanghai I met with a major […]

New year, new directions

January 2, 2011

It’s the beginning of a new year–2011. My boys both got sick today and the house got quiet, which gave me some time to really think about some questions on my mind. Do you plan at the beginning of the year?  Do you set goals?  I think it’s a good practice to reflect on the […]

Self knowledge

November 29, 2010

One of the phrases forever associated with Socrates is “Know thyself” (γνωθι σεαυτον).  Of course, it isn’t his quote, because it was supposedly found at ancient Delphi in Greece where people went to consult the oracle. Leaders need healthy amounts of self-knowledge and self understanding.  We can get it from many sources.
